Tiffany Stone
The name ‘Tiffany stone’ is a trade name for a rare, purple stone, that is a composite of a number of minerals, found only at one, single mine in Utah although it has in time, become impossible for more of the mineral to be obtained from the mine.
The origins of the stones name is uncertain. One suggestion is that it relates to a Tiffany Harris of Utah, the supposed daughter of a miner who carried nodules of the stone home whilst another suggestion found within the realm of local folklore suggests that it is relates to Tiffany and Company of New York for their use of purple colouring within its decorative glassware.
The mineral is mined within the Brush Wellman beryllium mine located at Spor Mountain in western Utah. The stone is a form of opalised stone which is found to form in mineralised nodules. Comprised primarily of fluorite alongside of opal, calcite, dolomite, quartz, chalcedony, bertrandite and other minerals. Alternative names for the stone in question are inclusive of “opalised fluorite”, “ice cream stone” and bertrandite.
The stone, is highly prized due to both its rarity and its beauty for use in jewellery. Furthermore, individuals hold the stone to be useful for its supposed ability to strengthen bones and ligaments with a beneficial effect upon conditions such as tendonitis, arthritis and osteoarthritis. Further posited uses of the stone include the enhancement of clear thought, the enhancement of emotional strength, encouraging persistence, removing emotional blockages allowing a blossoming of emotional strength.
NOTE: The beryllium content within Tiffany stone is highly toxic. Care should be taken in relation to the rough mineral.
