Larimar
The name Larimar is a term used to refer to a rare variety of the mineral pectolite. This blue pectolite, redolent of the tropical seas of the Caribbean. While pectolite is not rare in and of itself, this prized variant is itself only found within the Dominican Republic. Known to some as the Caribbean stone, with its distinct colouration, it is highly valued by collectors and lovers of gems and minerals.
Per local legends, Larimar which also bears the name of Stefilia’s stone was first discovered during the year nineteen-sixteen by Father Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren, an event which the aftermath would see the stone forgotten and lost to history. That is, until it would be rediscovered by a Dominican local named Miguel Mendez and a visiting United States Peace Corps officer called Norman Rilling. The duo brought the name of the stone into existence combining ‘Lari’ after Mendez’s daughter with ‘mar’ from the Spanish word for ‘sea’ to bring into existence the stone’s name: Larimar.
Today, the only know source of Stefilia’s stone is the Filipinas Mine in Los Checheses, Dominican Republic. The exception to this case is the tendency of what is also called the Atlanits stone, due to legends of the Dominican Republic’s status as a remenant of the lost city of Atlantis, to wash up upon the shores of the Caribbean sea due to the course of Bahoruco River and its distribution of alluvial deposits carried out to the sea. Within the mines, the Larimar surfaces as the hot gasses push the deposits up toward the surface and when the crystal doesn’t manifest itself at the surface level, miners must dig down into volcanic chimneys and tubes.
Almost redolent of Turquoise, the Atlantis stone’s marbled-blue colour is the result of the presence of calcium deposits within the stone. Oxidation of copper and iron giving rise to the occasion of spots of green, red or brown.
The gorgeous blue stone is valued by individuals who seek minerals for spiritual purposes. This is due to the connection held between Larimar and abilities to soothe tempers, dampening enflamed tempers, enable to improve the flow of communication, to soothe and ease emotional stress reportedly being helpful for individuals who suffer from anxiety. The stone is believed to aid with the soothing of throat conditions, cardiac disorders and be helpful for the alleviation blood pressure and joint pain. This stone of Atlantis is reputed to be associated with the throat Chakra, thus lending to its reputation for being of utility for matters concerning the throat, speech and communication.
