Mundrabilla Meteorite
Discovered in 1911 and weighing in at 24 tons, the Mundrabilla meteorite is the largest meteorite discovered within Australia and the eight largest meteorite in the world. Also known as the Premier Downs meteorite due to the station upon which it was found, the meteorite was discovered by Harry Kent upon the station Premier Downs station upon the Nullabor plain, upon which, other meteorite fragments have been found. Fragments being discovered in the years shortly after the Mundrabilla meteorites discovery across the area.
Other large iron masses, weighing 9980kg and 5440kg, were discovered in 1966 by geologists R.B Wilson and A.M. Cooney during the course of a geological survey of the region. Furthermore, a flow of newly discovered fragments have found their way out of the region since these discoveries. |
