Moldavite
Moldavite is a unique variation of tektite, which are formed from the debris that is jettisoned from the site of a meteorite impact, widely known for its specimens of a bottle green shade. Amazing specimens, they are prized amongst some for their widely believed quality of the effects of high vibrational energy which is said to enhance ones spiritual evolution. Even individuals who are not usually receptive to such effects have described such effects. Discovered in 1786, the mineral is named for the German name for the river in which it was first found; Moldau, Czech Republic – known therein by the Cezch name ‘Vltavln’ after the local name for the river – Vltava. The formation of Moldavite was from the impact approximately 15 million years ago which created the Ries crater within Germany, creating a strewn field that is primarily found within the Czech Republic, small areas being distributed within the borders of Germany and Austria. Thus discounting the existence of any Moldavite from outside of this region – any attempt to suppose Moldavite from outside of this area being fraudulent. Moldavite is the most transparent variation of tektite which has lent itself to the creation of Moldavite jewellery – Moldavite Pendants and Moldavite rings being a popular choice for those who utilise the mineral in such a manner. While found in many shades between brown and green, it is the bottle green variety that is most sought after for use in faceting.
